I find that every Bottega tells a different story, tying the knot to connect its end (pun intended). What fascinates and excites me most about Bottega is that through all the different phases of the company and different designers the brand has stayed true to who they are always adding what makes them so loveable and unique somewhere in each bags design. For this pink suede mini shoulder bag it is the leather shoulder straps detail. The classic knot does not go unnoticed and shows beautiful craftsmanship and detail to what to the untrained eye might look like a simple bag. This shoulder bag exudes luxury in an understated way which I believe is the essence of Bottega Veneta. Although I am unsure what year this bag is from I am assuming it is from one of Bottegas low points in history. I think it's cool to own something from a major fashion house like Bottega during a lull in their history. It's a reminder that everyone comes from humble beginnings (or in this case middles), what comes up, must come down, and that the mighty do sometimes fall but they can always pick themselves back up again.

A little Bottega History:

Bottega Veneta was founded in 1966 by Michele Taddei and Renzo Zengiaro. They are best known for their technique known as Intrecciato. The 80’s are when Bottega really took off. Bottega is known for it leather weaving technique, in turn coining the term “when your own initials are not enough” Andy Warhol was a big fan of Bottegas classic woven style and was often seen sporting it. He even documented a short film for them. What I love the most about Bottega is how throughout all the years and decades the brand has stayed true to themselves even through the highs and lows of the company. In the 90’s, when the 2 founders of the brand left, they experienced a serious hit that lasted until 2001. That’s when they were bought by the Gucci group, appointed by Tom Ford who was the creative director at the time, Tomas Maier took creative control. He served as the creative director until 2018, in the process bringing the luxury handbag company out of debt and earning them their first billion. It’s unclear why Maier stepped down but his time at Bottega was celebrated. In 2005 Maier embarked on the women’s ready to wear collection, and in 2006 Men’s. Maier gained recognition and love by celebrities like Kanye West and Cameron Diaz. In 2018 Maier took his talents a step further and mixed the men’s and women’s ready to wear shows together, it got rave reviews and catapulted the company to a new level. After Maiers exit Daniel Lee who we all know and love today took creative control of the brand. Daniel Lee was the youngest designer to join the Kering stable. (Kering houses include: Gucci, YSL, Balenciaga, and many more) Lee proved himself, winning 4 awards in one night. This was a break in history as not one designer had ever won 4 awards in one night! Not JPG, Phoebe Philo… no one! Lee had not only proven himself, he became an icon. Bottega is one of the most recognizable fashion labels in the world, and just when we think the luxury leather brand can’t get any better, it does.
