Dolce and Gabbana Cream Satin Bustier Dress. Size 42, fits a US 4.

It was a Sunday in June, I was thrifting with my sister, something she has come to appreciate, a direct effect of growing up with me. She's actually the only person I enjoy to thrift with, she allows me to take my time and does not get bothered by my endless, and sometimes annoying questions. We were strolling on the Lower East Side, heading to an outdoor flea market off of East Broadway. On our way I noticed a little hole in the wall thrift shop I had never been to before. My anxiety sparked, was I losing my touch? Inside was a dimly lit narrow thrift shop. It had popcorn ceilings and mannequins crammed into small spaces dressed in whatever did not fit on the clothing racks. Single file lines were the only way to get through the shop.

I was peeling through the crammed racks of extremely mediocre clothing at a very high price point when I stumbled upon this SS 2010 Dolce dress, NEW WITH TAGS. DEADSTOCK. MY FAVORITE. (Everyones favorite.) My heart skipped a beat, something it often does when I find a treasure. You have to be very careful when thrifting anything of 1. Satin fabric and 2. The white, cream, tan family. Not a blemish in sight. I was confused, how did this dress end up here? No but seriously, who brings a classic Dolce, new with tags, in mint condition, to a place like this.... I wanted to ask but I decided against it.

Monday came and went and as I stared at the dress my curiosity re-bubbled (I hope thats a word)... How did I get my hands on this dress? Whats the story behind it? I literally had to know. SO much so that I decided to march myself back to the shop, except, when I got there, it was gone. Completely empty, with a for rent sign in the window. It was as if a ghost sold me this dress.

What I do know is that this is a timeless piece, the type of thing you pass down to your children, like a viv corset, or a Chanel bag. And I don't think I'm holding a classic Dolce bustier to too high of a regard (I know all my fashionistas reading this (if anyone is reading this) are raising their eyebrows right now but hear me out.

To me, this dress is the very essence of Dolce and Gabbana. One of their classic designs that seems to be sold out year in and year out. Something that could have been designed in 1990 or 2020. One of the first designs that put Mr. Dolce and Mr. Gabbana on the map. The Crème de la crème (pun intended). (I hope anyone reading this got that and I don't need to explain myself).
